Ian was worried about the effect of the number of problems including indexing and link dampening, and was desperate for help. However, he had read some rather misleading articles in the past, so he'd a somewhat confused knowledge of the facets at play. I chose to submit the facts of our conversation, since I believe he is maybe not alone in his distress and concern.
Ian's email contains several issues. I have shown each separately below, accompanied by my answer.
Q: When I look for the number of backlinks to my site using 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', I see only 2-3 results. A: Firstly, I do believe you might have the dampening link filter only a little puzzled. According to the dampening link filter concept, your links are located and acknowledged by Google, you just don't get the full benefit from them until certain time period has passed. The dampening url filter (if it exists) doesn't stop links from appearing in Google's results when you look for them. I'd 32, it went down to 28 and it's down to 26 now this morning. Do they only keep the pages for monthly or is there more to the indexed pages than I realized?
A: The number of indexed pages is simply the number of pages on your site that Google 'knows about.' Theoretically, the only time age a page is needed is if the page is too young*, i.e. Google spiders have not visited it however, or Google has not updated its index. As to why the number of indexed pages is reducing, I imagine it is only a temporary transfer. How many leads to Google's searches differs virtually constantly.
*Actually, technically speaking, it's been suggested that Google isn't capable of indexing all 11.5 billion pages currently thought to be on line (and the 10 million more that are added each day), and that as it indexes new pages, old pages are pushed from the list. (This is an extremely rough description of the theory - if it is happening at all, it's likely to be a lot more complicated than this.) If this is happening, it might explain why the reported number of indexed pages is reducing. A great way to cope with it's to maintain top quality content, to keep raising it, to keep producing backlinks, and to generate a Google sitemap, while I think it is a long shot.
